I believe any illegal alien who has a history of criminal activity, particularly felonies involving violence or habitual property crimes, should be ineligible to adjust status at any time, including any opportunity for amnesty should it ever happen.

However, felonies related only to immigration violations, excluding for-profit smugglers and the like, should be treated separately. An individual who illegally enters the United States in search of better opportunities and/or family reunification commits no crimes of violence or against property. The motive and effect of such a crime is in a different category than those who operate criminal enterprises (smugglers) or purposely vandalize, steal, rob, assault, kill, etc.

I won't defend some of the pro-immigrant groups that are most visible. They tend to make poor arguments and sometimes their motives are questionable. As for everyone else, I believe a majority of illegal alien "supporters" (those who tend to support a path to legal status and not strict enforcement within the US) would agree that certain felons with certain crimes should not be allowed to adjust status.

Another common misconception is that anyone who "supports" illegal aliens also supports an open border. This, too, is not the case. If any form of amnesty is reached, it must be accompanied by an effective way to manage the border and decrease the demand for illegal crossing. After all, if the goal of amnesty would be to gain control of a situation and reorganize efforts to maintain control and shift resources most effectively, the border must be handled appropriately. Amnesty alone will not work in the long run, as we have seen since 1986.
